UDJG Prepares to Purchase Grand Hotel Galați
“Dunărea de Jos” University of Galați is preparing to purchase the Grand Hotel, the former headquarters of the Galați City Hall.
The building located at 38 Domnească Street has been up for sale for over a year. The Grand Hotel was built between 1911 and 1912 and is registered on the list of historical monuments; it is known as the former headquarters of the Galați Municipality. After the municipality moved to its new headquarters, the old building remained waiting for a buyer willing to pay the sum of 2.45 million EUR.
The purchase offer comes from the neighbors across the street, “Dunărea de Jos” University of Galați. The technical-economic indicators of the building will be submitted for approval to the Board of Directors and the University Senate after the building’s evaluation is completed.
If acquired, after rehabilitation, an IT business incubator will be set up—an IT and technology hub where students and the business environment will have the opportunity to collaborate and develop.
The Grand Hotel is a building in a composite style, with neoclassical and baroque decorative elements. From an architectural point of view, two bow windows stand out, arranged symmetrically relative to the main entrance and richly decorated, framed with vertical ornaments featuring geometric and floral motifs, well-emphasized at the eaves level by semicircular decorative pediments.
Today, the building is in very good condition, as the fact that it was functional until recently has kept it in excellent shape. With a total built-up area of more than 3,000 sqm and a plot of land larger than 3,200 sqm, the property offers multiple usage options, being easily adaptable to return to its hotel function, or it can be given a commercial, office, or even residential destination.
