Tourists Could Pay a Tax Dedicated to Tourism Promotion

Tourists will have to pay a tax of at least 1% of the total cost of the accommodation service for tourism promotion, according to an amendment to the draft Tourism Law voted on in the Senate’s economic, industries, and services committee.
Hoteliers will be the ones collecting this tax, and local authorities will be legally obligated to impose and decide its amount.
The new tax will be collected by accommodation service providers and cannot be less than 1% of the total value of accommodation services, excluding meals and other related services.
Currently, such a tax is provided as optional in the Fiscal Code, but through this amendment, the tax will become mandatory.
Antal Istvan-Lorant put forward the example of the Cluj-Napoca metropolis, where, following such a tax in the amount of 2 lei/tourist per night, annual funds of 1 million euros are collected for tourism promotion, and in the municipality of Covasna, a similar tax of 1 leu brings in funds of 600,000 lei annually.
Now, the law thus amended will be sent with a favorable adoption report to the Senate plenary, with the final decision on the project to be made by the Chamber of Deputies.
