The city of Timisoara has been designated the European Capital of Culture for 2021, the selection committee announced on September 16. The Banat city campaigned with a project titled “Shine your light – Light up your city!”.
The competing cities for the title of European Capital of Culture 2021 were Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, and Baia Mare.
“It has become one of the most prestigious events. The concept of European Capital is extraordinary because it promotes intercultural dialogue and emphasizes the sense of belonging to the European Union. We must bring Europe closer to the people. Culture is the ‘core’ from which Europe was built. Cultural values bring us closer together,” stated Karel Bartak, Head of Culture Unit within the European Commission.
More than just a cultural festival, the title of European Capital of Culture brings into discussion the role of culture in the life of a city and the sustainable way in which it can contribute to the prosperity of citizens and the city.
The title of European Capital of Culture is awarded to a city in the European Union, from candidate or pre-candidate countries, for a period of one year. By 2019, 60 cities will have held the title of European Capital of Culture. The program is considered the flagship cultural initiative of the European Union.
Timisoara has 24 libraries, 19 cinemas, 11 conference halls, 14 contemporary art galleries, 6 theaters, 4 museums, a Philharmonic and an Opera, 4 cultural spaces, 47 heritage sites, 24 schools, 8 centers for the cultural and creative industry, 340 squares and inner courtyards, 18 public and commercial buildings, and 2 refugee transit centers.
In 2021, there will be three European Capitals of Culture: one from EU candidate countries (Serbia and Montenegro), one from Greece, and one from Romania.
