The Romanian Seaside Lacks a National Strategy and Remains Dependent on Domestic Tourists

The Romanian seaside holds 41% of Romania’s accommodation capacity. It is a major tourism product that has not found its place in any national strategy. Left out, the Romanian coast operates for a maximum of three months a year, exactly as long as the students’ summer vacation: June 20 – September 15.

With unique tourist attractions and spa facilities, the Romanian seaside is dead in the off-season. Tourism specialists say this happens due to the lack of a national strategy for promoting the Romanian coast to attract, in particular, foreign tourists willing to come to the sea in April-May or September-October.

Traian Badulescu, a tourism consultant, says the Romanian seaside can become an “all year round” destination, but to get there, several factors must be met. For example, increasing the number of treatment bases would be essential.

Badulescu also specified that the development of spa and wellness centers for prevention and relaxation is necessary. These can attract tourists during holiday periods, but not only then. In addition, the Municipality of Constanta can become a destination for events and city breaks throughout the year.

Corina Martin, owner of the Mistral Tours & Events Constanta travel agency, points out that tourism is a disregarded industry, and the “Romanian seaside” tourism product is outright ignored by county and government authorities. “We don’t have a strategy; the seaside hasn’t even entered the brand strategy. The concern of the county authorities is zero regarding tourism in this county, and therefore we have no strategy whatsoever. We are dependent on the national market.”

Incoming tourism—attracting foreign tourists—is the solution presented by all tourism specialists for the seaside to extend its operating period.

Without an incoming policy, we remain dependent on Romanian tourists who only come to the seaside in the summer. In addition, we do not have charter flights to bring such tourists to the shore.
