The European Union Launches the Search for the 2023 Destination of Excellence

The European Commission has launched the 2023 European Destination of Excellence (EDEN) competition. Applications can be submitted until June 1st through the institution’s website.

This initiative aims to recognize and reward smaller destinations that have successfully implemented strategies to promote sustainable tourism through green transition practices.

The title of 2022 European Destination of Excellence is held by the Danish city of Middelfart, located on the island of Funen, the third largest in the country.

To date, 175 destinations from 27 countries have received the award annually for various themes.

This competition aims to promote the development of sustainable tourism in destinations that offer added value to the economy, the planet, and people. It is open to European Union countries and non-EU countries participating in the COSME Program: Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom.

The 2023 European Destination of Excellence will be announced in November 2022.

To compete for this title, destinations will be asked to demonstrate their best practices regarding sustainable tourism and the green transition.

The winning destination will receive support from communication and brand development experts in the EU throughout 2023.
