The number of Romanians who chose to travel abroad this summer decreased by 58% compared to the same period last year, according to the financial platform Revolut.

Throughout the summer, Revolut analyzed the spending habits and travel destinations of Romanian users compared to the same period in 2019.

Revolut users aged between 24 and 34 were the ones who traveled the most this summer. They traveled four times more than individuals aged between 45 and 54.

The top three holiday destinations preferred by Romanians in 2020 remain the same as in 2019: Bulgaria, Greece, and Hungary.

Romanians withdrew more cash during their holidays in 2020. On average, Romanians withdrew the equivalent of 1,400 RON in cash during the holiday period, 39% more than in the same period of 2019, when the average amount withdrawn was 1,000 RON. Cash usage increased by 39%.

Regarding the type of accommodation, Revolut users in Romania opted for both hotels and private properties. While the number of people choosing Airbnb remained constant, those who chose to spend their holiday in a hotel decreased by 56% in 2020.

While in 2019 Romanian tourists spent the most in bars, cafes, and restaurants, in 2020 they opted not to go out as much, which led to a significant increase in spending at grocery stores and supermarkets; these ranked second among the main spending categories, after cash withdrawals.

Comparing to last year, Revolut users spent 207% less on physical purchases in other countries—the total amount being 216 million RON.
