Major Development Project for the “Western Seaboard”

The Ghioroc leisure area, nicknamed the “Western Seaboard” due to its 11,000 sqm fine sand beach and 66-hectare lake, is set to be developed through a €5 million project. The plan includes infrastructure works, the creation of a sports base, and the restoration of the beach, where several reed umbrellas will be installed.

The mayor of Ghioroc, Corneliu Popi-Morodan, stated that the summer season at Ghioroc Beach will officially open at the end of June, although the leisure area is already open to tourists, as some vendors have already begun operations.

Compared to last year, there will be no major changes to the facilities offered to tourists this season, except for the opening of a new restaurant and a children’s playground in the commercial area.

However, the mayor specified that Ghioroc Beach will implement its first development project using European funds since the commune became a resort of local interest in 2020, reports Agerpres.

“This is a 5,000,000 euro project that will be submitted this year for funding through ADR Vest. In the Ghioroc leisure area, which totals 105 hectares—including the lake and all tourist facilities—we will carry out infrastructure works, restore the promenade and the sandy beach, and install significantly more umbrellas, as requested by tourists. We will set up a permanent stage, and next to the sports hall already under construction with funds from the National Investment Company, this European project will enable us to build an open-air field for various sports,” declared Corneliu Popi-Morodan.

During the 2023 summer season, the “Western Seaboard” was visited by approximately 120,000 people, a 10% increase compared to 2022. By comparison, the Neptun Strand in Arad, once considered the largest in Romania and the second largest in Europe on a flowing water body, had just over 83,000 visitors last year.

Ghioroc Beach, located about 20 km from Arad, has been used by tourists for decades. However, in recent years, public and private investments have attracted thousands of visitors, especially from western Romania and Hungary. Lake Ghioroc covers 66 hectares with a maximum depth of 15 meters, and the beach is equipped with palm trees, umbrellas, canopies, terraces, water slides, children’s playgrounds, and a campsite. Access is free, but drivers must pay a parking fee of 10 RON/day, funds which the local administration uses to maintain the leisure area.
