Ilie Bolojan Proposes Hotel on Unused Oradea Airport Land

A proposal by the President of the County Council, Ilie Bolojan, for the construction of a hotel in the immediate vicinity of Oradea Airport, on land freed up by the new perimeter fencing, has been unanimously approved.

The head of the county administration pointed out that, within the recently completed modernization works for the airport, one of the projects focused on the implementation of a smart security system featuring sensor-equipped fences, which were moved further from the road than the old fence.

“A compact area of over 6 hectares has thus been freed up, for which the Master Plan for the development of the area provides for related activities and economic activities that capitalize on the land’s position. We aim to attract a private investor, following the model used for the construction of the Cargo terminal, to build a hotel, naturally taking height restrictions into account. Pilots of aircraft remaining overnight could stay there without having to go to other hotels in the city; they would reach the terminal from the hotel in 5 minutes,” Bolojan explained.

As the adopted resolution currently only concerns “expressing an agreement in principle,” Ilie Bolojan added that the county administration will devise a mechanism through which it will either lease the land via auction to a company that will undertake the hotel construction or draft a superficies contract—meaning the use of the land for the duration of the hotel’s existence—built, in this case as well, by private entities.

According to the project approved by the county counselors’ vote, the future hotel would occupy, including its related facilities, a maximum area of 15,000 sqm out of the over 66,000 sqm freed by moving the airport’s perimeter fence.

It is worth noting that in that area, on the other side of the DN 79 national road, a private investor has already built a hotel, so if another one is built within the airport perimeter, they will compete with each other.

Currently, Tarom pilots and flight attendants serving the last evening flight on the Bucharest – Oradea route and the morning flight in the opposite direction, Oradea – Bucharest, stay overnight in hotels in Oradea.
