Last year, overnight stays in tourist accommodation structures in Romania increased by almost 16%, reaching 23.4 million, the highest growth in the European Union; however, Romania remains among the least sought-after destinations by foreign tourists, most of whom prefer Spain, Italy, and France.
In total, foreign tourists spent 4.5 million nights in Romania last year, an 18.3% increase from 3.8 million nights in 2014, according to data presented by Eurostat.
Among the destinations less chosen by tourists are Slovakia – 4.3 million nights spent by foreign tourists, Estonia – 3.8 million nights, Lithuania and Latvia – 2.9 million nights each.
Regarding overnight stays at the European Union level, these increased by 3.2% to over 2.76 billion, of which 1.26 billion represent the number of nights spent by non-residents.
The most sought-after destination by foreign tourists was Spain, with 268 million nights, or 21% of the total nights spent by non-residents in EU accommodation structures, followed by Italy with 191 million nights or 15% of the total, and France with 134 million nights or 11% of the total.
Regarding overnight stays by residents in hotels and guesthouses in Romania, their number increased last year by 15.3% to 19 million nights, also the fastest growth in the EU, Eurostat data shows.
