The Bucharest Airports National Company (CNAB) has launched the public tender for the modernization of Runway No. 1 of the “Henri Coandă” International Airport – Otopeni, a project with an estimated value of approximately EUR 106 million. The investment is considered the most important in the airport’s history and aims to bring the infrastructure in line with international standards and expand the operating capacity.

The complex project includes the complete resurfacing of runway 08R-26L, the construction of five new aircraft taxiways and the modernization of two existing ones. It will also completely replace the beaconing facilities, upgrade the associated underground wiring, reconfigure the runway safety area, and relocate portions of the perimeter road. At the ends of the runway, anti-slide aprons will be constructed to protect the runway embankments from engine jet blast during take-off. The runway last underwent a capital upgrade in 1994, with repairs needed in 2017.

According to the specifications, the execution of the works has a maximum term of 16 months, preceded by a design period of 9 months. The deadline for submission of bids is December 18, 2025, and the minimum warranty required for the works is five years. The works will be ph phased so as not to disrupt current air operations and to ensure permanent access for military aircraft from Base 90 airlift.
