Wizz Air, Romania’s leading airline market leader, has announced the reopening of its operational base at Târgu Mureș “Transilvania” International Airport, almost two decades after the company’s inaugural flight to Romania, which took off from the same airport in 2006. The strategic move includes the allocation of a modern Airbus A320neo aircraft and the launch of 10 routes to eight European countries.
Starting from the end of March 2026, Wizz Air will operate new flights from Târgu Mureș to Brussels Charleroi, Larnaca, Dortmund, Paris-Beauvais, Basel, Rome-Fiumicino, Milan-Bergamo, London-Luton and Memmingen. In addition, the frequency of flights to Budapest will increase to daily from December 2025. Prices for the new destinations will start from 79 RON (€14.99).
The reopening of the base will create 40 new jobs locally. Târgu Mureș thus becomes Wizz Air’s ninth base of operations in Romania, with more than 1,600 employees in the country. With the new aircraft, the total fleet operated in Romania will reach 39 units for the winter season, although company officials have mentioned plans for 43 aircraft nationwide. “Romania remains a key market for us,” said András Radó, Wizz Air’s communications director. For his part, Peti András András, the airport’s director, confirmed that technological and personnel upgrades have been carried out to meet the necessary standards.
Nationwide, Wizz Air operates 219 routes from 14 airports, connecting Romania with 82 destinations in 27 countries. Csibi Attila-Zoltán, vice-president of Mureș County Council, described the moment as an important step in reconnecting the region to the European network and shaping the local economic future.
