The “Acumulare Vacaresti” natural area has been declared a natural park, named “Vacaresti Natural Park,” and a protected natural area regime has been established, according to a decision adopted on May 11 by the Government.
Thus, Vacaresti Natural Park becomes the country’s first urban protected area and the capital’s largest green space.
The park includes 190 hectares of green space and is home to 97 species of birds – 45 species in various stages of protection – and mammals such as: otter (protected species), fox, weasel, raccoon dog. Other species such as the land tortoise and water turtle are also found here.
In the coming period, the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests will select an administrator for the area based on a space development project. This is the first time since 2012 that the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests has decided to officially take on this project.
The organizations involved in this endeavor are: the Vacaresti Natural Park Association, the “Save the Danube and the Delta” Association, and “Let’s Do It, Romania!”.
