Romania’s highest roads, the famous Transalpina and Transfăgărășan, have opened to tourists. The roads cover hundreds of kilometers and pass through some of the most beautiful mountain areas. Locals along the trails have already set up their pensions and are waiting for tourists.
Access to the two roads is only possible during the day.
“June 06, 2025 at 7.00 am, we open Transfăgărășanul (DN7C)! Those who wish to, will be able to travel on this beautiful tourist road including between Bâlea Cascadă (Sibiu County) and Piscul Negru (Argeș County). I remind you, however, that the specificity of this mountain road at high altitude allows traffic only between 07:00 – 21:00. It is also possible that the road may be temporarily closed in the event of adverse weather conditions,” wrote Cristian Pistol, CNAIR’s Director General.
From Poenari Fortress, Lake Vidraru and up to Bâlea Lac, on a route that stretches over 150 kilometers, in three counties, the Transfăgărășanul passes through some of the most beautiful areas in Romania. But beware of bears. The authorities advise tourists to stay away from the animals.
