The city of Oradea and the adjacent resort of Baile Felix recorded almost half a million tourist arrivals in 2024, consolidating its status as a major tourism pole in Romania. The success is due to strategic investments in architectural heritage, infrastructure and services, and the development momentum continues, with ongoing projects that will add almost 1,000 new accommodation places in the region.
Current accommodation capacity in the area exceeds 12,500 beds, of which over 3,000 are in Oradea and over 9,500 in Baile Felix. Expansion plans include plans for 276 new rooms in Oradea, along with event and catering facilities. At the same time, in Baile Felix, projects are in various stages of construction or authorization that will add 669 accommodation places, targeting the spa and wellness segment. These investments are in line with the national spa tourism development strategy, through which Romania aims to compete with established markets such as Hungary and the Czech Republic.
Oradea’s tourist offer focuses on the cultural and city-break segment. The main attractions include the historic center with Union Square, the Black Eagle Palace and the recently restored Oradea Citadel. The city’s international status is reinforced by the fact that it is the only Romanian member of the Art Nouveau Cities Network, alongside Vienna, Barcelona and Budapest. In addition to its architectural sights, the city offers a constant cultural agenda with festivals and events, as well as leisure facilities on the banks of the Criș Repede.
In addition, Baile Felix is the main destination for spa and wellness tourism, capitalizing on thermal waters with therapeutic properties. Continuous investments in modernization of hotel complexes and leisure facilities are aimed at attracting an increasing number of foreign tourists to this segment. Local authorities and industry operators are actively promoting the region in order to increase its international visibility and attract tourists from outside the country, an area in which Romania still ranks last in Europe.
