Tourism Minister Mircea Dobre hopes for a doubling of tourism’s share in GDP over the next 3-4 years. He wants to increase tourism’s contribution from 1.5% of GDP to 3%. “We must ask ourselves if it really is 1.5% at this moment and if everyone is paying taxes. I am discovering all sorts of private entities that are not fiscalized, not registered, certified, or licensed, and it is a problem,” the minister stated. However, he did not explain how he intends for Romanian tourism to achieve this explosive growth.
He declared during a conference organized by the HoReCa industry association, Hora, that he aims for the Tourism Law to be debated and finalized by July 1, but to come into force on January 1, 2018, because there needs to be a preparation period not only for private entities but also for those in local public administration.
