The Danube Strategy aims for the economic and social development of the Danube macro-region

The European Union Strategy for the Danube Region, EUSDR, represents a political initiative of Romania and Austria from 2008 and has developed as a community mechanism for cooperation among the states in the Danube basin. Its purpose is the economic and social development of the Danube macro-region by strengthening the implementation of EU policies and legislation in the region.
Fourteen states participate in the Danube Strategy, including 9 EU member states – Austria, Romania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Germany – as a federal state and through the states of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, and 5 non-EU states – Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, the Republic of Moldova, and Ukraine.
Based on the European Commission’s proposal to modify the geography of transnational cooperation programs for the 2014-2020 period, the Danube Transnational Programme was developed.
Romania participates with its entire territory in this program, which aims to fund projects implemented within an extended transnational partnership, with the objective of improving public policies and institutional cooperation in priority areas established by the participating states, in accordance with the objectives of the EU 2020 Strategy and EUSDR.
The Ministry of Tourism, although not the manager of this program at the national level, will be actively involved in identifying the best public projects proposed for funding.
In this regard, according to a press release, the Ministry of Tourism will hold a series of discussions with central, regional, and local public authorities and institutions, universities, research institutes, NGOs, and other public and private organizations participating in consultations conducted by the Ministry of Regional Development, Public Administration, and European Funds, as the National Authority and National Contact Point, in view of launching the second call for projects under the Danube Transnational Programme 2014-2020.
According to the same press release, the sum of approximately 60 million EUR available to Romania through this program can support investments that bring economic growth by capitalizing on the huge national tourism potential.
