Tara Dornelor becomes Romania’s 5th ecotourism destination

Tara Dornelor in Suceava County has become the fifth ecotourism destination in Romania, being officially recognized by the National Tourism Authority.
Currently, the map of ecotourism destinations in Romania also includes Tara Hategului – Retezat (Hunedoara County), Tinutul Zimbrului – Vanatori (Neamt County), Zarnesti – Piatra Craiului (Brasov County), and Mara – Cosau – Creasta Cocosului (Maramures County).
Tara Dornelor obtained the “ecotourism destination” status at the initiative of the Tara Dornelor Ecotourism Association (AETD), following actions carried out within the development and consolidation projects of ecotourism destinations in Romania, funded by the Romanian-American Foundation and the Partnership Foundation, Green Entrepreneurship 2.0 Program.
The evaluation visit took place between May 28-30, 2019, and was conducted by representatives of the ANT, the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests, the National Institute for Research and Development in Tourism, and the Association of Ecotourism in Romania.
The Tara Dornelor tourist area is located in the southwestern part of Suceava County, in the historical region of Bucovina, overlapping the Dorna Depression relief unit. It comprises the municipality of Vatra Dornei and nine communes – Ciocanesti, Carlibaba, Iacobeni, Dorna Arini, Saru Dornei, Panaci, Dorna Candrenilor, Cosna, and Poiana Stampei. The destination is bordered by four mountain massifs of the Eastern Carpathians: Giumalau, Calimani, Suhard, and Bistritei.
The presence of the protected natural area, Calimani National Park, makes the development of ecotourism in the area even more necessary for the conservation of this natural setting of exceptional value.
