Sibiu – Brasov climbs on the list of priority highways

Sibiu-Brasov highway promoted among Romania’s strategic projects.

The Sibiu – Brașov highway, one of the most awaited road connections in the center of the country, is climbing significantly in the top of national infrastructure priorities. If in 2021 it occupied the ninth position in the list of major road transport projects, today it has been moved up to the fourth place, according to the updated Investment Program 2021-2030, a document prepared by the Ministry of Transport.

This project aims to provide an essential link between Transylvania and the south of Romania, with a direct impact on passenger and freight traffic. In addition, it will complete the highway linking the capital to the country’s western border, providing a modern and fast route through the mountains.

An important part of the future highway, the Sibiu – Făgăraș segment, has already entered the execution phase. With a length of 68 kilometers, this section is divided into four lots and will be built over four years, one of which is allocated to design. The total investment amounts to almost 7 mln. RON, and work is in full swing to connect Sibiu to the central part of the country.

At the same time, the Brasov – Făgăraș segment, part of the A13 highway, is in the process of obtaining environmental permits. This section will be 50 kilometers long and is designed for a speed of 120 km/h, which is typical for hilly routes. The estimated cost is around 4.7 bn. RON, and will take 30 months from the issuance of the construction permit.

In its complete form, the Sibiu – Brasov highway will radically transform regional connectivity, providing a direct link between Bucharest and Sibiu, but also further to the country’s western border. With this investment, the authorities aim not only to improve traffic flow, but also to stimulate economic development through a modern road network compatible with European standards.

The new position among the top strategic projects confirms the importance of the Sibiu – Brasov highway for Romania’s internal and international mobility, as well as the Government’s commitment to accelerate the implementation of major road infrastructure projects.

What needs to be built on the Sibiu – Făgăraș highway:

Section 1 (Boița – Avrig)

Section 2 (Mârșa – Arpașu de Jos), 14.25 km

Section 3 (Arpașu de Jos – Sâmbăta de Sus), 17.61 km

Section 4 (Sâmbăta de Sus – Făgăraș), 16.26 km
