A new tourist destination is showcasing the Republic of Moldova through the “European Village” Program. This is the village of Scoreni, Strășeni district, where a museum complex has been developed, with the main attraction being the largest barrel in the country.
Under the governmental “European Village” Program, a very large barrel was constructed in Scoreni—a village famous for its master coopers—which will house the Village Museum. The complex also features an exhibition and wine-tasting hall for tourists and guests of the locality.
The barrel stands 11m high and 8m wide, with a volume of 250,000 liters. However, it is not intended to be filled with wine.
Within the complex grounds, a barrel-making workshop was built, where local folk craftsmen will organize masterclasses for locals and tourists.
A large stage was also installed there for various cultural and artistic activities. The area has been equipped with a car park.
This project aims to revitalize secular craftsmanship traditions and promote rural tourism, as well as including the locality in the Căpriana – Condrița – Ialoveni tourist route.
The barrel or “poloboc” is the symbol of Scoreni village; the first wooden barrels were born in this locality, and this beautiful craft has been passed down from father to son, from generation to generation, bringing fame to the coopers of Scoreni. The construction of the world’s largest barrel signifies the promotion of local tradition, traditional elements, folk craftsmen, local products, and the Scoreni community. Furthermore, in the future, authorities plan to organize a Barrel Festival, where participants will be able to experience for themselves what it means to hold a chisel.
