Rupea Medieval Fortress was rehabilitated with 26 million EUR

Between 2010 and 2013, the Rupea Medieval Fortress or Cohalm Fortress, located on Cohalm Hill, was rehabilitated through an investment of 26 million EUR.
The project aimed at rehabilitating the fortress over an area of 1.44 hectares, restoring the 7 towers and the small houses where residents of surrounding villages would retreat during difficult times, a special lighting system that highlights the historical monument, creating two access roads to the fortress from Brasov and Sighisoara respectively, a pedestrian path equipped with steps and railings, a tourist information center at the main entrance of the fortress, and an exhibition space for cultural heritage objects, 110 parking spaces, including 10 for coaches.
While the 2009 financing application estimated the arrival of 5,295 Romanian and foreign tourists for the first year of operation following the project’s completion, in reality, from the conclusion of the works on June 15, 2013, until the same date in 2014, the fortress was visited by 61,000 tourists, and after the first quarter of 2015, over 150,000 tourists had visited it.
Both the Rupea City Hall and the Brasov County Council wish to include the site in a circuit targeting the cities of Brasov-Sibiu-Sighisoara and to organize national cultural events that will better highlight this location.
