Romania ranks among top EU nations for domestic tourists who spent at least one night in an accommodation structure in their own country

According to a report by Eurostat on the occasion of European Tourism Day, the majority of Europeans spend their holidays on the continent, and most choose to travel to domestic destinations.
In total, Europeans made 1.2 billion trips last year, of which 94% were to destinations within the European Union, most often in their own country of residence.
Poland, Romania, and Germany rank among the top positions in the European Union based on the percentage of residents who spent at least one night in an accommodation structure in their own country.
The number of nights spent in tourist reception structures in Romania stood at 26.9 million, an increase from nearly 25.3 million nights in 2016, of which 24.9 million represented overnight stays by residents and tourists from other EU states.
At the opposite pole, Malta, Cyprus, and Croatia were the EU countries with the highest percentage of non-resident tourists.
