Romania ranks among the last countries in the EU for tourist stays

Only 26% of Romania’s population over the age of 15 took at least one tourist trip for personal purposes in 2014, while the European Union average is 60% and in Finland it was 88.2%, according to data published on May 9 by the European statistical office – Eurostat.
Furthermore, Romanians rank last in the EU regarding the number of nights spent abroad relative to the country’s population. In 2015, Luxembourg was the country whose residents spent the most nights abroad per capita, with an average of 23.3 nights, while at the opposite end were Romania, Bulgaria, and Greece, whose residents spent, on average, less than one night abroad in 2015.
At the European Union level, in 2015, Spain was the main tourist destination for non-residents, with 270 million overnight stays in tourist accommodation establishments, equivalent to 21.3% of the total overnight stays in EU tourist accommodation, followed by Italy – 193 million nights, France – 130 million, and the United Kingdom – 118 million.
Together, these four countries were responsible for more than half, specifically 56.2%, of the total overnight stays in EU tourist accommodation establishments by non-residents.
Romania is at the bottom of the ranking, near Slovakia, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, and Luxembourg.
Regarding the economic aspects of international tourism, in 2015, the share of tourism revenue in the GDP of EU member states was highest in Croatia – 18.1%, Malta – 13.4%, and Cyprus – 12.7%.
