Bathing water quality in 2015 for the 28 EU member states, plus Albania and Switzerland, shows that Romania, tied with Albania, ranks at the bottom when it comes to the percentage of bathing zones with excellent water quality – 32%, while in eight member states, over 90% of bathing zones showed excellent water quality in 2015: Luxembourg (all 11 reported bathing zones), Cyprus (99.1%), Malta (97.7%), Greece (97.2%), Croatia (94.2%), Italy (90.6%), Germany (90.3%), and Austria (90.2%).
Across Europe, only 385 bathing zones were assessed in 2015 as having poor water quality. The percentage of bathing zones considered to be of “poor” quality decreased from 1.9% in 2014 to 1.6% in 2015.
On the Black Sea coast, the “excellent” rating can be granted to 15 beaches, 22 beaches received a “good” rating, 11 beaches “satisfactory,” and one beach received a “poor” rating, according to a study by the Ministry of Health drafted based on data collected between 2012-2015.
