The Government of the Republic of Moldova has approved the opening of negotiations with the State of Qatar for a mutual administrative assistance agreement in the field of customs. The move aims to create a legal framework to streamline cooperation, combat fraud, smuggling and tax evasion and secure trade chains, in the context of the intensification of economic relations between the two countries.
The draft agreement, drawn up by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Chisinau, foresees the facilitation of rapid data exchange, joint measures to prevent illegality and coordinated action to investigate customs infringements. It will include direct communication mechanisms between customs authorities, with the aim of aligning national practices with modern control and compliance standards. The government argues that increased trade flows require strengthened cooperation instruments to protect national economic interests.
This is part of a broader process of developing bilateral relations between the Republic of Moldova and Qatar. The Gulf state is seen as a potential strategic investor, with interest in key sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, green energy, tourism and real estate projects. Although current trade is modest, the trend is upward. Moldovan exports with potential for the Qatari market include agri-food products, wines and fruits, while imports from Qatar consist mainly of oil products and technical equipment. Once the negotiations are finalized, the agreement will be signed and subject to ratification procedures.
