The number of passengers who transited Romanian airports increased last year by 23.5%, reaching 16.39 million passengers, according to data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
Henri Coanda International Airport recorded a traffic of 10.98 million passengers in 2016, representing 67% of the total passengers registered in Romania.
In second place among airports is Cluj-Napoca, with 1.88 million passengers (11.5%), and in third place is Traian Vuia Airport in Timisoara, with 1.16 million passengers (7.1%).
Out of the total, international transport has a share of 89.1%, respectively 14.6 million passengers, the rest being passengers on domestic flights.
In the international passenger transport segment, Henri Coanda Airport has a share of 69.2%, with 10.1 million passengers, followed by Cluj-Napoca with 10.8% and Traian Vuia with 6.3%.
In the domestic transport sector, Otopeni Airport has a share of 48.9%, followed by Cluj-Napoca with 16.8% and Traian Vuia with 13%.
Freight traffic at Romanian airports recorded a much lower growth rate than passenger traffic, 9.7%, from 36,600 tons in 2015 to 40,100 tons in 2016.
Henri Coanda Airport has a market share of 85% in this segment, followed by Traian Vuia with 9.7% and Cluj-Napoca with 2.6%.
