Only 60% of accommodation units are open for the holidays

Over 60% of accommodation units are open at full capacity for the holidays, and 49% of them offer special winter holiday packages, up to 15% lower than last year, according to a study conducted in November by the hotel booking platform Travelminit.ro.

For Christmas, 34% of hoteliers confirm that their accommodation is fully or partially occupied, while 12% are only partially occupied because they operate at reduced capacity, and 17% of units are not open during the Christmas period.

For New Year’s Eve, there is a higher occupancy rate of 38%, and 10% of hoteliers have their accommodation partially occupied for New Year’s Eve because they operate at reduced capacity. Over 12% of them confirm they are not open during the New Year’s period.

To attract Romanians for the holidays, hoteliers have prepared special packages. Thus, over 30% of the responding accommodation units offer specific winter holiday activities, such as horse-drawn sleigh rides, mulled wine served by the fireplace, carol programs, etc.

Over 35% of the packages offer full board or half board with specific winter holiday dishes, including festive Christmas dinners.

According to the current situation, SPA services are excluded from the packages; only 4% of hoteliers confirm they offer wellness services, depending on the regulations in force at the time of the stay.

Most Romanians opted for a holiday vacation of at least 3 nights; thus, over 65% of all bookings recorded by hoteliers are made for 3-5 nights, and 33% of bookings are made for 1-2 nights.

The average price for a holiday stay is between 400 and 650 RON for 2 people, with 58% of hoteliers confirming this.

Of the bookings made, 33% have a value between 651-1400 RON/2 people, and 9% of hoteliers confirm that the purchased packages have a value of over 1,400 RON.

45% of hoteliers offer flexible booking conditions, without a deposit or with free cancellation. This is highly appreciated by tourists, as 59% of the bookings made so far for the holidays were finalized 48 hours before check-in. Another measure to increase winter bookings is price reduction on the eve of the holidays, as well as updating prices in the offer for the following year. Approximately 20% of hoteliers are preparing special offers and seasonal last-minute and early-booking offers, and 12% have included extra services in the packages offered, such as: hiking, bicycle rentals, free use of the outdoor pool, etc. The study shows that 54% of hoteliers are optimistic for next year and hope that tourism will gradually recover starting in February, while 33% do not know when tourism will return to the conditions they were used to before the pandemic.
