Number of tourist trips by residents decreased by 8.2% in 2016

In 2016, the number of tourist trips made by residents decreased by 8.2% compared to 2015, to 17,367,300, and Romanian tourists preferred short-duration trips, of less than four nights, and accommodation with parents, grandparents, relatives, or friends, according to data centralized by the National Institute of Statistics.
Last year, the share of vacation trips in total trips was 90.1%, while business and professional trips represented 2.6%. Most vacation trips made in 2016 were those between 1-3 nights.
63.9% of Romanians preferred staying with relatives and friends, followed by accommodation in hotels and similar units with 15.1%, and other accommodation units – 10.6%.
In business and professional trips, Romanian tourists chose to stay in hotels and similar units in a proportion of 38.6%, followed by staying with relatives and friends – 22.4% and other types of unpaid accommodation 20%.
The peak month for domestic vacation trips was December, with a share of 17.5% of total domestic trips, and for international ones, the peak month was August, with a share of 25%. For domestic business trips, the peak month was February, with a share of 13% of total domestic trips, and for international ones, the peak month was November, with a share of 21.2%.
In a proportion of 99.4%, vacation trips abroad made in 2016 had destinations in Europe, with European Union countries representing 95.1% of the total of these trips.
The total number of overnight stays related to trips made in 2016 was 67,651,400, of which 59,339,000 represented overnight stays recorded for vacations. 86.4% of these were made in Romania and 13.6% abroad.
Last year, Romanian residents spent approximately 9.781 billion RON for vacation and business trips, of which 77.6% for those targeting domestic destinations. Of the total tourist expenditures for vacation trips in 2016, 78.6% represented expenditures for domestic trips, and 21.4% for trips abroad.
