New Rules in the Capital’s Old Town

Selective waste collection exclusively in plastic bags, on different days and only within a specific morning interval, is one of the measures included in the draft regulation for the sanitation, hygiene, and beautification of the Capital’s Old Town.

Furthermore, those who own terraces on the streets of the Historic Center will be required to hand over used oil to an authorized operator and report the quantities of oil handed over to the Bucharest City Hall.

Fines for non-compliance with the regulation reach up to 5,000 RON.

The regulation will be discussed in the upcoming meeting of the General Council of the Municipality of Bucharest (CGMB).

The project’s initiator, Mayor Gabriela Firea, states that a very large amount of waste is produced and stored uncontrollably, and the fact that several operators handle sanitation in the center means more heavy-duty garbage trucks enter the streets of the Old Town, leading to street deterioration.

According to the regulation, both legal entities and individuals will be required to collect waste selectively, only in plastic bags provided by the sanitation operator, who will collect the waste according to a schedule: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for paper-cardboard waste; Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday for plastic, PET, aluminum cans, and glass; and daily for biodegradable and food waste.

All of these will be collected only in the morning, between 4:00 and 10:00. Additionally, street trash bins will be washed once a week.

Another measure imposed by the regulation will require merchants to collect used oils and hand them over to the sanitation operator, then report the amount of oil used and handed over to the Bucharest City Hall every month.

Furthermore, eco-toilets, regardless of ownership, will be washed daily from May to October and twice a week from November to April.

Regarding fines, these will range between 500 and 5,000 RON for non-compliance with the regulation.
