Measures taken in most European countries, the need for physical distancing, and the fact that schooling is conducted online are sending thousands of Romanians—who would otherwise have chosen ski slopes or continental cities—to exotic destinations such as the Maldives, Cancun (Mexico), Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), Zanzibar, Egypt, and Ras al-Khaimah (UAE) for New Year’s Eve and the following two to three months.
Romanian tourists travel to these destinations via direct charter flights. Before departure, they must present a negative Covid-19 test.
In November of this year, demand for exotic destinations exploded when the first charter flight to the Maldives for New Year’s Eve sold out in four days, despite the cheapest package being 1,299 EUR/person, according to Dertour’s Romanian representative. At the same time, the flight to Zanzibar was also fully booked, where a vacation cost from 1,319 EUR/person.
A second charter flight was launched for New Year’s Eve to the Maldives, and seats were exhausted within a few days. The third charter flight sold out in a single day.
The high demand is explained both by the fact that many European countries, favorite ski destinations in previous years, have imposed restrictions on tourists, and by the fact that many Romanians have not had a vacation since last winter and are eager to escape after so many months of restrictions. Added to all this is the fact that these destinations offer secluded spots, social distancing, and tourists arrive there with negative tests, providing an extra layer of safety.
