“Stefan cel Mare” International Airport in Suceava has embarked on an extensive modernization process, with cumulative projects worth over EUR 66 million, designed to significantly increase the operating capacity and attractiveness for airlines. The program, announced by Suceava County Council (CJ) President Gheorghe Șoldan, includes the construction of a new terminal, the implementation of an advanced landing system and the modernization of road and airport infrastructure.
The central project is the construction of Terminal 3, an investment of EUR 60 million. With an area of about 10,000 square meters, three times larger than the two existing terminals, it will be financed, most likely, by a loan from the European Investment Bank or, alternatively, from the own budget of the CJ Suceava. The feasibility study and the necessary approvals have been finalized, and the tender for the execution of the works will be launched. The project also includes an extension of the parking lot.
In parallel, a Category III ILS instrument landing system is being implemented, which will allow operation in dense fog conditions. CJ Suceava has finalized the infrastructure works from its own budget, while ROMATSA has started equipment installation and calibration flights. The system is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025, making Suceava the second airport in Romania with this capability. In addition, the boarding-deplaning platform will be modernized with an investment of 8 million lei (approximately EUR 1.57 million), funds from Suceava CJ, covering new markings, lighting and automatic aircraft guidance systems.
Road connectivity is also targeted. Work started in March 2024 on a new 4.78 km access road, which will link the airport to the Burdujeni neighborhood and provide a direct connection to the A7 highway. The investment, financed by the Suceava CJ, amounts to 23.77 million lei (about EUR 4.67 million).
These developments come as Wizz Air reopened its operational base with eight new routes to Vienna, Brussels Charleroi, Venice, Bologna, Milan Bergamo, Birmingham, Birmingham, Larnaca and Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden. Animawings has also launched direct Suceava-Bucharest flights, which are very busy, and the company is considering introducing a W to an external destination. The county administration confirmed that it is in talks with three other airlines to introduce new flights.
