Brasov County Council (CJ) has approved an investment of EUR 16.54 million for the expansion of the airport’s boarding-deplaning apron, a project considered a top priority due to the accelerated growth in military traffic and pressure from commercial air operators. The work, which will add five new aircraft parking positions, is expected to be completed in its entirety over the next year, postponing other planned investments such as the construction of related buildings.
The investment, officially named “Expansion of the boarding/ deplaning platform with 5 positions, realization of a fast track, extension of the lighting network, TVCI system, beaconing, storm drainage, relocation of medium voltage electrical installations and fiber optics”, has a total estimated value of 84.1 million lei (16.54 mil. The decision to redirect the funds to this project was taken by the airport’s new Board of Directors to respond to current demand. Mihai Pascu, president of Brasov Airport’s Board of Directors, said that the evolution of traffic, including military traffic serving Romanian and NATO forces, required this reprioritization to ensure the vital infrastructure for the airport’s operation.
The pressure from airlines wishing to base their aircraft in Brasov is steadily increasing, according to the vice-president of Brasov City Council, Todorică Serban. He estimated that two aircraft permanently parked at the airport could generate traffic of more than 800,000 passengers annually.
The airport currently has a single apron with three parking positions. The new project will add a total area of 49,831 square meters, including a new apron 286 meters long and 135 meters wide and a new 436-meter taxiway. The airport’s runway is 2,820 meters long and 45 meters wide.
