Metro to Otopeni: Key moment reached on M6 construction site

The Magistrale 6 subway project, a strategic investment for the capital’s infrastructure, has reached an important milestone. The completion of the second tunnel on the southern section marks a significant step forward in linking Bucharest’s underground transport network to Henri Coandă International Airport, a key objective for urban mobility and the business environment. This advance consolidates the work schedule for one of the most awaited metro lines in Romania.

According to Metrorex’s announcement, the tunnel boring machine named “Sfânta Ana” will complete next week the construction of the second tunnel segment between the future Tokyo and Aeroport Băneasa stations. The 105-meter-long rig, weighing about 600 tons, started excavating this 900-meter section on May 28, 2025, installing a total of 600 concrete rings during the works. This success comes after the first tunnel of the main line was completed in the summer of this year by the second machine, the “St. Mary”.

The M6 Magistrala, which will connect North Station with Otopeni Airport, is designed to have a route of over 14 kilometers, with double track and 12 stations served by 12 new trains. The project is divided into two sections. The current work, carried out by the Turkish construction consortium Alsim Alarko – Makyol, is on the southern section, from 1 Mai station to Tokyo station. The plan is that once this stage is completed, both drilling rigs will be relocated to start excavation on the northern section, from Tokyo to Otopeni Airport, which is scheduled for February next year.
