INS: Number of Foreign Tourists Visiting Romania Increased at the Start of the Year

Romanian tourism gained momentum in the first month of the year. More foreign tourists visited our country, while the number of Romanians traveling abroad also increased.

Paradoxically, arrivals at accommodation facilities and overnight stays decreased by 2% and 3.2%, respectively, in January 2024 compared to the same period last year. Most foreign visitors were from the European Union, with those from Asia ranking second.

Romanian tourists preferred mountain resorts at a rate of 27.9%, compared to spa resorts at 10.6%. The coast and the Danube Delta were also among the preferences of Romanians, but in a negligible proportion, given it is not their season.

Both Romanian and foreign visitors chose to spend time in Bucharest and the country’s major cities in January. Notably, the share of foreign tourists in this case was 80.7%, indicating an underrepresentation of other tourist areas.
