Essam Abouda, Vice President of Operations for Eastern Europe, Russia, and Turkey at Hilton Worldwide, stated that Romania, like Russia and Turkey, is a growing market in the region he coordinates, with increasing potential for Hilton Worldwide brands. The hotel group intends to expand on the local market, and work is already underway to open another 7 hotels.
Currently, Hilton has 5 hotels in Romania, and two units will be opened this year: in Iasi, where the former Europa hotel will become Hampton by Hilton, and in Sighisoara, where the former Cavaler hotel becomes DoubleTree by Hilton. The hotel in Iasi is expected to open in the second half of 2014.
“Currently, we are focusing on large cities, county capitals, such as Iasi, Cluj-Napoca, and Timisoara, where we have found a very high interest in our brands in the focus service hotel segment: Hampton by Hilton and Hilton Garden Inn. There are cities outside Bucharest that would be suitable for hotels in the upscale segment, such as DoubleTree by Hilton Sighisoara, which is currently being renovated. For the moment, we are focusing on developing the mid-market brand portfolio and we see potential for new hotels, as well as for the conversion of existing properties,” Essam Abouda added.
Outside Romania, the Hilton group will open two hotels in Russia this year: Hampton by Hilton in Moscow and Hilton Garden Inn in the city of Ufa.
