In January 2017, compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, both arrivals and overnight stays in tourist reception structures with accommodation functions recorded increases of 13.4% and 8.5%, respectively.
 Compared to January 2016, in January 2017, foreign visitor arrivals at border points increased by 21.7%, while Romanian visitor departures abroad decreased by 14.8%.
Arrivals recorded in tourist reception structures in January 2017 totaled 659 thousand, an increase of 13.4% compared to January 2016. Of these, 79.4% represented arrivals of Romanian tourists and 20.6% represented arrivals of foreign tourists.
Regarding the arrivals of foreign tourists in tourist reception structures, the largest share was held by those from Europe – 76% of the total foreign tourists, and of these, 78% were from European Union countries.
Overnight stays recorded in tourist reception structures in January 2017 totaled 1,242.2 thousand, an increase of 8.5% compared to January 2016. Of these, 78.5% represented overnight stays of Romanian tourists and 21.5% represented overnight stays of foreign tourists.
Regarding the overnight stays of foreign tourists in tourist reception structures, the largest share was held by those from Europe – 77% of the total foreign tourists, and of these, 73.2% were from European Union countries.
The average length of stay in January 2017 was 1.9 days for Romanian tourists and 2 days for foreign tourists.
The net occupancy rate of accommodation places in January 2017 was 20.1% for total tourist accommodation structures, an increase of 0.2% compared to January 2016.
Higher occupancy rates in January 2017 were recorded in hotels – 25.1%, tourist villas – 17.9%, inns – 17.8%, tourist boarding houses – 15.3%, tourist chalets – 13.7%, and student and preschool camps – 13.6%.
The highest number of arrivals of foreign tourists staying in tourist reception structures with accommodation functions came from Germany – 14.8 thousand, Israel – 14.4 thousand, Italy – 14.3 thousand, the Republic of Moldova – 9.6 thousand, and France – 8.9 thousand.
