Arrivals registered in tourist reception structures in March 2017 totaled 722.3 thousand, an increase of 11.8% compared to March 2016. Of these, 75.8% represented arrivals of Romanian tourists and 24.2% represented arrivals of foreign tourists.
Regarding the arrivals of foreign tourists in tourist reception structures, the largest share was held by those from Europe – 75.6% of the total foreign tourists, and of these, 83.9% were from countries belonging to the European Union.
Overnight stays registered in tourist reception structures in March 2017 totaled 1342.8 thousand, an increase of 8.6% compared to March 2016. Of these, 75.3% represented overnight stays of Romanian tourists and 24.7% were foreign tourists.
Regarding the overnight stays of foreign tourists in tourist reception structures, the largest share was held by those from Europe – 75.7% of the total foreign tourists, and of these, 83.6% were from countries belonging to the European Union.
The average length of stay in March 2017 was 1.8 days for Romanian tourists and 1.9 days for foreign tourists. The net occupancy rate of accommodation places in March 2017 was 21.3% for total tourist accommodation structures, an increase of 0.2% compared to March 2016.
Higher occupancy rates in March 2017 were recorded in hotels – 27.8%, hostels – 16.5%, tourist villas – 14.9%, tourist guesthouses – 14.3%, motels – 12.9%, and agritourism guesthouses – 9.4%.
Arrivals of foreign visitors to Romania, registered at border points, were 852 thousand in March, an increase of 21.4% compared to March 2016.
The majority of foreign visitors come from countries located in Europe – 90.6%. Of the total arrivals of foreign visitors to Romania, 56.4% come from European Union states.
Among the European Union states, the most arrivals were recorded from Bulgaria – 27.5%, Hungary – 21.4%, Italy – 11.2%, Germany – 8%, the United Kingdom – 4.9%, and Poland – 4.7%.
Departures of Romanian visitors abroad, registered at border points, were 1370.2 thousand in March 2017, an increase of 22.5% compared to March 2016. Road transport means were the most used for departures abroad, representing 67.8% of the total number of departures.

Regarding the overnight stays of foreign tourists in tourist reception structures, the largest share was held by those from Europe – 76.6% of the total foreign tourists, and of these, 80.4% were from countries belonging to the European Union.
The average length of stay in the first quarter of this year was 1.9 days for both Romanian and foreign tourists. The net occupancy rate of accommodation places was 21.4% for total tourist accommodation structures, an increase of 0.2% compared to the same period in 2016.
Higher occupancy rates were recorded in hotels – 27.2%, tourist villas – 17.1%, tourist guesthouses – 15.8%, and hostels – 15.5%.
The most arrivals of foreign tourists accommodated in tourist reception structures with accommodation functions came from Germany – 49.2 thousand, Italy – 48.2 thousand, Israel – 44.2 thousand, the United Kingdom – 29.5 thousand, and France – 29.4 thousand.
Arrivals of foreign visitors to Romania, registered at border points, were 2191 thousand in the period January – March 2017, an increase of 22.1% compared to the same period in 2016.
The majority of foreign visitors come from countries located in Europe – 91.1%. Of the total arrivals of foreign visitors to Romania, 54.9% come from European Union states.
