Evolution of arrivals and overnight stays in January 2020

Arrivals registered in tourist reception structures in January 2020 totaled 796.3 thousand, an increase of 5% compared to those in January 2019. Of these, 84.0% represented arrivals of Romanian tourists, and 16% represented arrivals of foreign tourists.
Regarding the arrivals of foreign tourists in tourist reception structures, the largest share was held by those from Europe – 73.2% of total foreign tourists, and of these, 77.8% were from countries belonging to the European Union.
Overnight stays registered in tourist reception structures in January 2020 totaled 1,575.5 thousand, an increase of 7% compared to those in January 2019.  Of these, 82.5% accounted for overnight stays of Romanian tourists and 17.5% represented overnight stays of foreign tourists.
Regarding the overnight stays of foreign tourists in tourist reception structures, the largest share was held by those from Europe – 72.1% of total foreign tourists, and of these, 75.4% were from countries belonging to the European Union.
The average length of stay in January 2020 was 1.9 days for Romanian tourists and 2.2 days for foreign tourists. The net occupancy rate of accommodation places in January 2020 was 25% for total tourist accommodation structures, an increase of 1.6% compared to January 2019.
Higher occupancy rates in January 2020 were recorded in hotels (31%), tourist villas (22%), bungalows (19.9%), hostels (19.4%), tourist pensions (18.6%), and tourist chalets (16.4%).
Arrivals of foreign visitors to Romania, registered at border points, were 823.7 thousand in January 2020, an increase of 12.7% compared to January 2019. The majority of foreign visitors come from countries located in Europe – 94%. Of the total arrivals of foreign visitors to Romania, 47.9% come from European Union states, and among the European Union states, the most arrivals were recorded from Bulgaria (38.2%), Hungary (23.3%), Italy (8.3%), Germany (5.8%), Poland (4.4%), France (3.7%), and the United Kingdom (3%). 
Departures of Romanian visitors abroad, registered at border points, were 2,044.5 thousand in January 2020, an increase of 14.1% compared to January 2019. Road transport means were the most used for departures abroad, representing 70% of the total number of departures.
