The European Commission is launching the next edition of the European Capital of Smart Tourism competition. This initiative rewards European cities for exceptional, innovative, digitalized, and sustainable tourism practices.
To apply, city representatives are invited to complete an online form. The application deadline is June 1, 2022.
Previous winners were Bordeaux and Valencia (2021), Gothenburg and Malaga (2020), and Helsinki and Lyon (2019).
Regarding “smart tourism,” considering evaluation criteria such as accessibility, sustainability, digitalization, cultural heritage, and creativity, Romanian cities have much to catch up on.
Taking over the title from the current European Capitals of Smart Tourism, Bordeaux and Valencia, the winning cities will benefit from expert communication and branding support throughout 2023. Through this, they will showcase the remarkable smart and innovative practices that made them stand out and become the 2023 European Capitals of Smart Tourism.
This support will include the creation of a promotional video, a large hashtag sculpture to be installed in a prominent location, various promotional activities, and EU-wide and international visibility. Winners will also have the chance to join an active and growing network of smart destinations selected in previous editions of the competition, exchange best practices, and learn from one another.
The European Capital of Smart Tourism is an EU initiative, currently funded under the COSME Program. Therefore, the competition is open to both EU cities and non-EU countries participating in the COSME program[1].
In the second stage, 7 shortlisted cities will have to present their candidacy to the European Jury. The European Jury will select 2 winners, the 2023 European Capitals of Smart Tourism, who will be announced in November 2022.
