Bulgaria has reportedly managed, in the last two months, to attract 50% of the tourists who normally went to Turkey or Greece. A core of tourists with middle and above-average incomes has coalesced around this destination, individuals who are willing to spend more because they are accustomed to the quality found in Greece and Turkey.
“Those who usually go to Turkey and Greece are now looking for hotels in Bulgaria because it is the most permissive destination for Romanian tourists; it does not require PCR tests, and you don’t have to quarantine upon return, as no Covid-19 cases have been reported on the Bulgarian coast. A large part of the clientele in Bulgaria—perhaps even 50% of current tourists—has never been to the Bulgarian coast before. Because Bulgaria is generally a family destination, we are seeing an increase in the couples segment. They used to constitute the clientele for Turkey and Greece,” stated Sebastian Constantinescu, CEO of Travel Planner.
In general, the tourist who has shifted to the Bulgarian coast has an income of at least EUR 800-1,000/month per adult member. They are part of a family with at least one child and come from Romania’s major cities. For their vacation, they are interested in 4 and 5-star chain hotels, considering it is their first time visiting the Bulgarian coast. Constantinescu specified that in the last two months, over 1,800 clients who gave up on Greece and Turkey chose Bulgaria as their holiday destination for August and September. This number is expected to continue growing in the coming period.
