Bucharest Residents Block Mall Construction Near Stirbei Palace

The real estate project, which is set to be built in the immediate vicinity of Stirbei Palace, a national heritage building, would cover 30,000 square meters. A mall is intended for the available land, but 800 Bucharest residents have already signed a petition attempting to block this real estate project.
“It is another real estate hit that disregards everyone and everything,” people say. “There is no justification for exceeding the maximum allowed height, from 22 to 34.5 meters, the proposed height for the building behind Stirbei Palace. A structure of such height would infringe upon Stirbei Palace, a Class A historical monument of national importance, with a height of only 17 meters,” the petition text specifies.
The dissatisfaction of Bucharest residents is also linked to the fact that “the placement of the building in the project would also affect the National University of Arts, as its spaces clearly need natural light, not the shadow of a colossus defiantly planted within the area’s building complex,” the same petition states.
