Baia Mare Airport Could Reopen in June

Baia Mare Airport, which was closed in 2015 following the start of expansion and modernization works on the airport surfaces, could be reopened at the beginning of June, although there are still a series of procedures to be completed, and the Executive must also approve the transfer of a plot of land so that the airport can be certified for flights.

The Government allocated 15 million RON last week for the modernization works at Baia Mare International Airport.

According to the project, the modernized takeoff-landing runway was to be 2,150 m long and 45 m wide, with the taxiways, the boarding-disembarking platform, the beacon system, and the storm drainage also set to be modernized.

The financing was provided 85% by the European Union, 13% by the Romanian Government, and 2% by the Maramureș County Council. The duration of the works was estimated at 5 months, but they have not been completed to this day.

According to an official document from the Baia Mare Airport management, from the beginning of this month, at the end of the first quarter of this year, the institution still had to pay 13.6 million RON to the Strabag AG Association and about 16 million RON to ARL Cluj, the contractors of the works.

Meanwhile, the airport management is in negotiations with Tarom for the resumption of the company’s domestic flights, with the operating contract to be concluded in the coming period.
