Almost 82% of Romanian hotels are classified with 3 and 4 stars

Of the total number of hotels in Romania, 81.6% are classified with 3 and 4 stars, according to the latest data published by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), which presents the situation at the end of July. The county of Constanța concentrated the highest number of tourist accommodation structures, while the “Coastal area, excluding the city of Constanța” offered the highest number of accommodation places. Most of the hotels in the INS research were categorized as 3-star (54.7% of all hotels), 4-star (26.9%) and 2-star (13.8%). 5-star hotels were in the number of 49 structures (5 more than on July 31, 2023). No. 283 / October 24, 2024 As of July 31, 2024, there were 87 tourist accommodations with lodging functions unclassified by star (compared to 141 on the same date last year), most of which were student and preschool camps (47.1% of the total in 2024), tourist cottages (13.8%), tourist cabins, apartments and rooms for rent (each with 8.0%), campgrounds (6.9%), and hostels (4.6%). 81.6% of hotels were classified as 3- and 4-star. Of the total 205.7 thousand rooms in tourist accommodation establishments with accommodation functions as of July 31, 2024 (excluding rooms in cottages), 102.6 thousand (49.9%) were in hotels. The area “Coastal, excluding the city of Constanta” provided the highest number of accommodation places. By tourist area, out of the total number of places (449.9 thousand), 113.2 thousand were in “coastal resorts (excluding the city of Constanța)”, 103.3 thousand were in “Bucharest and county capitals (excluding the city of Tulcea)”, 96.3 thousand in “other tourist localities and routes”, 86.2 thousand in “mountain resorts”, 40.4 thousand in “seaside resorts” and 10.5 thousand in the “Danube Delta (including the city of Tulcea)”. Clarifications and explanations from INS:

  • Tourist accommodation means any building or arrangement, which provides accommodation and other services for tourists on a permanent or seasonal basis.
  • The existing (installed) tourist accommodation capacity is the number of tourist accommodation places registered in the last act of reception, approval, classification of the tourist accommodation structure with tourist accommodation functions, excluding additional beds that can be installed if necessary.
  • The number of places is determined for tourist accommodation establishments with tourist accommodation functions existing on July 31, in working order.
  • Data source: statistical survey on “Tourist accommodation capacity on 31 July”; this statistical survey is addressed to all tourist accommodation establishments with a capacity of at least 5 beds (including apartments and rooms for rent), and which have a license (classified) from the Ministry of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Tourism – Department for Tourism, as of 25 June 2024.
  • The list included 18316 structures with more than 5 beds (including apartments and rooms for rent), of which 10710 accommodation structures and 1051 apartments and 6555 rooms for rent.
  • As of July 31, 2024, of the total accommodations, 1574 establishments were undergoing capital repairs and 2041 did not complete the questionnaire for other reasons. The next press release on “Existing tourist accommodation capacity on July 31, 2025” will be issued on October 24, 2025.
