UNESCO International Geopark Țara Hațegului, a new project to develop sustainable tourism

The UNESCO International Geopark Țara Hațegului, managed by the University of Bucharest, is partner in a new project aimed to valorize the natural and cultural heritage of Bretea Română.

Entitled “Experiences in nature and culture in Bretea Română”, the project aims to create attractive activities for visitors and residents, thus supporting the development of sustainable tourism and active community involvement.

The activities will run from April-September 2025 and aim to have a long-term impact by providing sustainable educational and tourism resources designed to contribute to the development of ecotourism in Hațegului Country.

The initiative is developed by the Drag de Hațeg Association, in partnership with the UNESCO International Geopark Țara Hațegului – University of Bucharest, Bretea Română Municipality, Bretea Română Primary School and the National Agency for Mountain Areas – Regional Center Hațeg. The project is funded by the Foundation for Partnership and MOL Romania through the Green Spaces Program – Protected Natural Areas Component, after winning a national project competition.

The UNESCO International Geopark Țara Hațegului encompasses the entire Hațeg Country and has the status of a UNESCO site, part of the International Program for GeoSciences and Geoparks, which gathers 213 territories from 48 countries included in the Global Geoparks Network, established after a selection and validation process. The UNESCO International Geopark status is administered by the University of Bucharest. The Geopark is a territory of natural and cultural values, a sustainable development program, a brand that proposes a journey back in time, in the 4.6 billion years of Earth’s history, a state of mind for all those who wish to participate in the rebirth of communities and is the meeting ground that brings together all those who feel attached to traditional values, whether they are real or virtual inhabitants. The Geopark encompasses elements of special geological interest alongside elements of ecological, archaeological, historical and cultural interest. The dinosaurs discovered in Țara Hațegului are unique in the world, their scientific importance and attractiveness being enhanced by the discovery of nests with dinosaur eggs and young, mammals contemporary with dinosaurs and a giant flying reptile (Hatzegopteryx), from the pterosaur group.
