The Statue of Prometheus at Vidraru Will Be Open for Visitors Again

Tourists will once again have access to the “Electricity Monument,” also known as the “Iron Man” or the “Statue of Prometheus,” located in the Vidraru Dam area on Pleasa Mountain.

Access to the monument has been prohibited for more than 2 years due to the risk of accidents, but recently Hidroelectrica, the owner of the dam, informed the relevant ministry that it will reopen the monument to visitors starting this spring.

The monument was created by sculptor Constantin Popovici in 1965 and depicts Prometheus with lightning in his hands as a symbol of electricity. Since September 2015, however, Hidroelectrica decided to no longer allow tourist access to the stairs leading to the platform of the monumental ensemble. The argument was that Hidroelectrica could not ensure the security and protection of tourists in an area with a major risk of injury.

At the beginning of this year, Hidroelectrica informed the relevant ministry that it had carried out a series of works to improve visitor safety by restoring railings, protective fences, and installing warning signs, so that tourists will be able to visit the Prometheus statue again starting April 15, 2018.
