Tara Dornelor Ecotourism Destination Status Extended

The Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Tourism has announced the extension of the ecotourism destination status for the Tara Dornelor area for a period of 3 years.

The destination covers ten administrative-territorial units in Suceava County, namely: Vatra Dornei, Poiana Stampei, Coșna, Dorna Candrenilor, Dorna Arini, Șaru Dornei, Panaci, Cârlibaba, Ciocănești, and Iacobeni.

The Ecotourism Destination concept was developed starting in 2012 by the central public authority for tourism, in partnership with representative national institutions and organizations (the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests, the National Institute for Research and Development in Tourism, and the Ecotourism Association of Romania), based on the National Ecotourism Strategy, the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria (GSTC), and the European Ecotourism Standard (EETLS).

At that time, in 2012, Romania was the first country in Europe to launch such a recognition system for ecotourism destinations.

Seven areas currently hold ecotourism destination status in Romania:

  • Zărnești-Piatra Craiului, Brașov county;
  • Bison Land-Vânători Natural Park, Neamț county;
  • Eco Maramureș (Mara – Cosău – Creasta Cocoșului), Maramureș county;
  • Tara Dornelor, Suceava county;
  • Retezat – Tara Hațegului, Hunedoara county;
  • Transylvanian Hills, Brașov, Mureș, and Sibiu counties;
  • Băile Tușnad and Surroundings, Harghita county.
