The Sibiu County Council has designated the winner of the public selection procedure for granting financial aid to companies opening new routes from Sibiu International Airport, a tender launched in January 2016.
“Of the 7 routes proposed for the tender, offers were submitted for only 4 by the sole participating airline, Wizz Air, which was also designated the winner of the tender. Wizz Air will operate flights to Milan, Madrid, Memmingen and Nuremberg, starting from the second half of the year,” according to a statement from the Sibiu County Council.
Contractual proposals are currently being analyzed, and the contract will be signed during April at the airport headquarters.
At the end of January 2016, the Sibiu County Council launched tenders for opening 7 new routes to European countries – Milan, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Memmingen and Nuremberg.
The company establishing new flights from Sibiu Airport benefits from state aid, after the Sibiu County Council obtained approval from the European Commission in this regard and can grant 2.8 million EUR.
The condition for providing state aid is that the route remains open for at least five years, and the opened route must not be operated from Sibiu Airport by any other company.
