Last year, Salina Turda was visited by 617,890 tourists, thus becoming the most visited public tourist attraction in Romania, 2016 also being the year with the most visitors in the mine’s history.
Simona Baciu, the director of Salina Turda, specified that last year, over 8,000 visitors were recorded in a single day, on St. Mary’s Day, and it was the first time the salt mine’s management had to interrupt visitor entry for 30 minutes because the underground flow had become too crowded.
The increasing number of tourists led the salt mine’s management to decide on an expansion of the visiting area by rehabilitating the Iosif Mine. For this purpose, the management intends to obtain funds through a new European project, as the work would be very costly.
The Iosif Mine has a conical shape and a surface area of approximately 3,000 sqm. The funds will be used especially for vertical circulation, which the mine currently lacks in the management’s opinion, with plans to install a larger elevator than the existing one.
Salina Turda was modernized a few years ago with European funds and is currently one of the country’s major tourist attractions, featuring children’s playgrounds, a giant carousel, sports areas – minigolf, bowling, billiards, table tennis, a lake where tourists can go boating, and an amphitheater for shows, as well as health zones where people can come to treat rhinitis, bronchial asthma, respiratory infections, or other diseases and conditions.
