Romania in top 10 European wine destinations, but only a third of wineries are open to tourists

Romania ranks seventh in Europe’s top wine destinations, according to the Wine Tourism Index by the TUI travel group. This performance is underpinned by annual wine production, although the local wine tourism sector still shows significant potential for development, with only a third of active wineries offering visitor services.

Last year, wine production amounted to about 3.7 million hectoliters, with the volume negatively affected by difficult weather conditions such as drought and hail. About 300 wineries producing bottled wine are active on the local market, according to Revino platform data. Of these, only 100 practice wine tourism, which includes welcoming tourists and organizing tastings. The number of producers also offering accommodation is considerably smaller. However, the segment has seen accelerated growth since the beginning of the pandemic, when Romanians started to rediscover domestic destinations. Growing demand for visits to wineries has spurred investment by local entrepreneurs in hospitality facilities.
