Residential Building Permits on the Rise in Romania

In February 2018, authorities issued 2,725 building permits for residential buildings, a figure 15.1% higher compared to February 2017. According to data provided by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), the growth was driven by an increase in the number of requests recorded in half of the country’s regions.

In January 2018, 2,009 permits were issued for the construction of residential buildings, 28.7% more than in the same period last year. The upward trend continued in February 2018, when 2,725 permits for residential buildings were issued, 358 more than in February 2017.

More than half (61.3%) of the permits for residential buildings issued last month refer to projects in rural areas, according to the INS.

The regions where increases were recorded in February 2018 are: Bucharest-Ilfov (+180 permits), South-West Oltenia (+99), West (+94), and South-Muntenia (+45).

Decreases in the number of permits for residential buildings were recorded in the North-West (-28 permits), South-East (-22), North-East (-6), and Center (-4) regions.

According to the INS, last year, the number of building permits for residential buildings was 7.6% higher than in 2016, reaching 41,603.

In 2016, the number of permits for residential buildings decreased by 1.2% compared to 2015, down to 38,653.
