The Ice Hotel at Bâlea Lac, Sibiu, has fallen victim to global warming. Even though the Făgăraș Mountains area has seen significant snowfall recently, the high temperatures in December have caused the project to be postponed.
Tourists who had reservations at the Bâlea Lac Ice Hotel have been informed that their bookings will be rescheduled.
The cause is the recent high temperatures and, especially, the forecasts for the next two weeks, which predict record temperatures even at high altitudes. Currently, at Bâlea, midday temperatures exceed zero degrees, making the construction of the hotel impossible.
It is unique in Eastern Europe, and among only a few dozen of its kind in all of Europe.
If reservations are canceled, the hotel owners could lose approximately 30,000 EUR from accommodation alone, in addition to other revenues from visitors or product sales.
This season, the Bâlea Lac Ice Hotel was supposed to have an aquatic theme, featuring various marine animals sculpted directly into the ice.
